Box Wood is a charming nature reserve located on the edge of the village of Box. This woodland habitat features a mix of beech, hazel, and box trees, creating an ideal environment for various wildlife, including the elusive hazel dormouse. The reserve is home to over 450 species, with 58 protected ones, and is managed by GWT in collaboration with local volunteers. Visitors can explore numerous trails and larger loops connecting to Minchinhampton Common and neighbouring Stuart Fawkes. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species, particularly in April when activity peaks, especially around 1:00 AM. Look out for the Hawfinch and Chaffinch at dawn, as well as the Dotted Bee-fly. The reserve also supports woodland butterflies in summer and is a great spot for birdwatching, with great spotted woodpeckers and tawny owls audible throughout the year.
