Boultham Mere is a tranquil nature reserve located within the City of Lincoln, featuring a picturesque lake surrounded by reed beds, sedge, and mature trees, predominantly willow and sallow. Originally excavated for railway ballast, it has evolved into a serene habitat that supports a diverse range of wildlife. The reserve is accessible on foot only, requiring an access code for entry, and includes a hide that overlooks the mere, providing excellent viewing opportunities. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with October being the peak month for activity. Notable sightings include Mute Swans, which are best observed around midnight, and wintering wildfowl such as teal and shoveler. February is also significant for observing Starlings and Greylag Geese, particularly at dusk. The reserve is rich in breeding birds, with pairs of reed and sedge warblers, as well as dragonflies and butterflies during the summer months, making it a vibrant spot for nature lovers.
