Bolgoed Quarry, located on the north side of the A480 between Pontlliw and Pontarddulais, features open-canopied mixed secondary deciduous woodland primarily composed of Ash and Birch, with a ground layer rich in Ivy and Bramble. The reserve also includes dense Gorse scrub and notable quarry faces that support various bryophytes due to groundwater seepage. This habitat is home to a diverse range of woodland birds, making it a significant area for wildlife observation. April is the best month to visit Bolgoed Quarry, with peak activity around 01:00. During this time, you can expect to see a variety of species, including Meadow Pipits, Canada Geese, and Robins. Additionally, the winter months provide opportunities to spot Woodcock, as the damp quarry floor serves as an ideal roosting and feeding site during colder weather.
