Bog Meadows is an award-winning urban nature reserve located in the heart of West Belfast, covering 47 acres of diverse habitats including species-rich meadows, reedbeds, ponds, and hedgerows. This green oasis, managed by the Ulster Wildlife Trust, serves as a vital resource for both local wildlife and the community, offering opportunities for recreation and education. Notably, it is a remnant of the floodplain of the River Blackstaff and has been preserved since the late 1980s. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of butterflies, with peak activity in July, including the speckled wood, small white, and large white. Spring visitors such as the orange-tip and green-veined white appear in May, while the small tortoiseshell is best spotted in April. Birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of mallards, coots, and the occasional kingfisher year-round, with notable autumn flocks of fieldfare and redwing arriving from Scandinavia. The best time for observing wildlife is around 1:00 AM, particularly in July when activity peaks.
