Boathouse Field is a small nature reserve located at the northern end of Derwentwater, featuring a mix of wet woodland and reed beds. This undisturbed lake shore habitat supports a variety of birds, including breeding sedge warblers, and is managed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust through non-intervention practices. The area has a rich history, having transitioned from grazed grassland to woodland since the 1990s, and is characterized by established trees such as ash, willow, and bird cherry. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see coots, mallards, and mute swans along the lake edge, with notable sightings of Canada geese peaking in September and greylag geese in August. March is particularly active for birdwatching, with oystercatchers and common mergansers making appearances, especially at dusk. For those interested in woodland birds, long-tailed tits and Eurasian siskins can be spotted in March and June, respectively, making these months ideal for a visit.
