Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve is a picturesque 150-hectare site created from flooded gravel pits, featuring a diverse range of habitats and stunning views across Ibsley Water. It is particularly popular with birdwatchers, offering six bird hides, four viewing screens, and 8km of accessible, surfaced trails. The reserve is maintained in partnership with Bournemouth Water and Wessex Water, making it an excellent destination for families and nature enthusiasts throughout the year. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species, with peak observations occurring in January, particularly at midnight, when species like the Great Crested Grebe and Nuthatch are active. Winter is an excellent time to visit, as up to 5,000 wildfowl, including Gadwall and Goosander, flock to the lakes. In summer, the aerial displays of dragonflies and damselflies add to the vibrant atmosphere, while the best times to spot the Maccoa Duck and Ruddy Shelduck are at dawn in November and August, respectively.
