Blackness Banks, located at the foot of the Golden Valley, serves as a vital wildlife corridor connecting habitats from Rodborough and Minchinhampton Commons. Acquired in 2021, this reserve features three fields of unimproved limestone grassland, home to over 65 species of flowering plants and important food sources for at least 30 butterfly species, including several priority species. The steep banks of the reserve have preserved its natural state, protecting it from intensive agriculture and offering stunning views across the valley. Visitors to Blackness Banks can look for a variety of wildlife, particularly in February when species like Magpies, Wrens, and Blackbirds are most active. The spring months also bring opportunities to observe bees and hoverflies, with peak sightings for species such as the Hairy-footed Flower Bee and Batman Hoverfly occurring in April and May. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for the best chances of spotting these creatures.
