Blackhall Rocks & Cross Gill is a coastal reserve located southeast of Blackhall Rocks, featuring dramatic cliffs and a rich geological history, including ancient reef-limestone and glacial deposits. This area is part of the Durham Coast SSSI and the Durham Heritage Coast, recognized for its ecological significance. The site has undergone extensive habitat restoration, leading to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare plants and various butterfly species. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Common Eider and Oystercatcher, with peak sightings in July and January respectively. July is particularly vibrant, offering opportunities to observe birds like the Meadow Pipit and Northern Fulmar at dusk. Additionally, the Red-backed Shrike can be spotted in September, while winter months may reveal Purple Sandpipers and Sanderlings. The best times for wildlife observation vary, with dusk being optimal for many species during the summer months.
