Black Plantation is a 13.8-hectare woodland located on the south bank of the River Browney, near Durham. This secondary broadleaved woodland, primarily composed of semi-mature birch with some oak and other native trees, has regenerated naturally after clear felling in the 1960s. The reserve features a diverse flora, including wood sorrel, primrose, and various fungi, alongside areas of species-rich wet grassland that support a variety of wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly, particularly in June, and various fungi that peak in September. Notable butterflies like the Speckled Wood and Peacock can be observed in July and August, respectively. The best time for sightings across species is around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding for those keen to experience the rich biodiversity of Black Plantation.
