Black Firs & Cranberry Bog is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and Ramsar site, part of the nationally significant peatland sites in Cheshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire. This unique reserve features a Schwingmoor basin mire, shaped by glacial activity, and is characterized by its complex drainage patterns from the 1800s. The site supports a variety of habitats, including wetland areas with species such as Royal Fern and yellow irises, alongside a diverse woodland of alder, oak, birch, and sycamore. For wildlife enthusiasts, April is the prime month to visit, particularly in the evening, when you may spot the Common Snipe, which is most active at dusk around 21:00. The reserve also offers a glimpse of the unusual syrphus, with its peak activity around 01:00. While sightings data is limited, the unique flora and fauna of Black Firs & Cranberry Bog promise an engaging experience for nature lovers.
