Black Brook is one of the largest nature reserves managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, located approximately 7 miles northeast of Leek in the stunning Staffordshire Moorlands. This precious habitat, primarily consisting of moorland, is part of the Leek Moors Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA). The reserve is undergoing significant restoration, transitioning from conifer plantation to open moorland and native woodland, enhancing its ecological value. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species, particularly in March when activity peaks, especially at dusk around 23:00. Listen for the calls of Eurasian Skylarks, European Goldfinches, and Eurasian Kestrels, or spot a Brown Hare. The reserve is also home to the elusive Barn Owl, best observed in November. With its rich flora, including heather and rare moorland plants, Black Brook offers a unique opportunity to experience the diverse wildlife of this rare habitat.
