Bishop’s Fen is a 20-hectare farmland nature reserve located about 2km south of Bishop Middleham in County Durham. Situated on the floodplain of the River Skerne, it is part of the Great North Fen vision, aimed at restoring the area's historical biodiversity. The reserve features a mix of species-rich grasslands, wetlands, and an old mineral railway that provides access and habitat diversity, all while undergoing restoration efforts by Durham Wildlife Trust. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of bird species, particularly in January when sightings peak for Baikal Teal, Graylag x Canada Goose hybrids, and Moorhen. Other notable species include Mute Swan in March and Ruddy Shelduck in February. The best times for observation are around midday for many species, making winter visits particularly rewarding for birdwatchers eager to experience the vibrant avifauna of this recovering habitat.
