Birch Road Pond, located just outside the centre of Ellesmere, is a transformed area of wet woodland and open water that offers a rich habitat for local wildlife. Once a rubbish dump, this delightful reserve now features dense summer vegetation, creating a vibrant jungle atmosphere. The site is valued by the community and serves as a refuge for various species, including frogs, newts, and dragonflies, making it an essential green space on the edge of town. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak activity in February when species like the Common Goldeneye and Tufted Duck are best observed around midnight. October is a notable month for gulls, including the Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls, which are best spotted in the late afternoon and at dusk, respectively. Birdwatchers may also enjoy sightings of herons, house martins, and a range of other birds during the summer months.
