Billown ASSI
UK Wildlife Trusts
Billown ASSI is a unique nature reserve located within an active quarry, managed by Manx Wildlife Trust with permission from Colas (IOM) Ltd. The site features fragments of species-rich limestone grassland and a newly created habitat that was established in 2022, doubling the reserve's area. The quarry pool is particularly significant for its diverse aquatic native plants, making it a vital area for conservation efforts. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife throughout the year, with notable species including the Robin, Blackbird, and Woodpigeon. Peak activity occurs in November, while specific highlights include the Common Darter in September and the 7-spot Ladybird in October. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for the best chances of observing these species.
