Bigbury Camp is an Iron Age hillfort located in Howfield Wood, just a short distance from Canterbury. Occupied from around 350 BC, this historic site features impressive defensive earthworks that have endured for over two millennia. The area has undergone reforestation with European Larch and Sweet Chestnut, but Kent Wildlife Trust is actively working to restore the natural habitats that existed during the hillfort's occupation, enhancing its archaeological significance. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, which peaks in February, particularly at dawn. January is the best month for observing various birds, including the Eurasian Blue Tit and Black-headed Gull, both peaking around midnight. Other notable sightings include the Common Firecrest in February and the Kingfisher in May, making these months ideal for visits to experience the rich avian life at Bigbury Camp.
