Betchworth Quarry is a 27-hectare nature reserve located in Surrey, within the North Downs and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This former chalk quarry features rich chalk grassland, abundant in wildflowers such as horseshoe vetch and various orchids. It is part of the Mole Gap to Reigate Escarpment Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, with a yew and broad-leaved woodland surrounding the site, enhancing its ecological diversity. The reserve is particularly vibrant during the summer months, making it an ideal time for visitors to explore its wildlife. Look for butterflies like the Meadow Brown and Small Heath, which peak in July and May respectively, with best viewing times around 1:00 PM. Birdwatchers may spot Marsh Tits peaking in July, while the Egyptian Goose can be seen in January. Overall, July is the best month for wildlife activity, providing a rich experience for nature enthusiasts.
