Besthorpe Nature Reserve, located near Newark, is a remarkable transformation of a former gravel extraction site into a thriving wildlife haven. The reserve features diverse habitats, including open water with islands, reedbeds, and traditional wildflower meadows. Notable for its rich birdlife, it includes an unusual inland colony of nesting cormorants and an ancient heronry, making it a valuable site for conservation and biodiversity. Birdwatchers can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with January being the best month for sightings. Key highlights include smew and great egret, peaking in January, particularly around mid-afternoon. Other notable species such as the western yellow wagtail and common sandpiper can be observed in June, especially at dusk. The reserve's diverse habitats provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.
