Berry Wood, located 500 m southeast of Knelston on the Gower Peninsula, is a mixed woodland reserve notable for its diverse tree species, including Oak, Birch, and Ash. This area, characterized by poorly drained glacial drift over Millstone Grit, features a blend of ancient and regenerating woodland, with significant historical roots evident in the 1847 Llandewi Tithe map. Access is via public footpaths, but there is no nearby car parking, and the site is not wheelchair accessible. Visitors to Berry Wood can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in July when activity peaks, especially around 01:00. Look out for species such as Buzzard and various finches in winter, while the presence of epiphytes and bryophytes adds to the ecological richness. Notable insect sightings include Cheilosia illustrata and Little Snipefly, with Rooks and European Starlings observed in February. The diverse habitats support a range of birds and insects, making it a rewarding destination for nature enthusiasts.
