Bernwood Meadows is a 7.5-hectare nature reserve located near Oakley in Buckinghamshire, managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. This traditional hay meadow features over 100 plant species, including green-winged orchids and lady's bedstraw, and is renowned for its vibrant wildflowers and diverse insect life. The reserve is part of the Bernwood Forest project, aimed at enhancing local habitats, and offers a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts. The best time to visit Bernwood Meadows is from April to early July when wildflowers bloom and butterflies are abundant. Notable species include the orange-tip and various grassland butterflies like the meadow brown and ringlet, peaking in June. For those interested in moths, the distinctive metallic green forester moth can also be spotted. Peak activity for butterflies generally occurs around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding.
