Bentinck Banks is a unique nature reserve located less than 1km south of Kirkby-in-Ashfield in the District of Ashfield. This area features a series of dismantled railway lines and embankments, now transformed into grassland and scrub habitats that support a rich diversity of wildlife. Notable for its calcareous grassland, the reserve showcases species such as greater knapweed and various orchids, some of which are rare in the county, alongside a variety of other flora indicative of chalk grassland. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a range of species throughout the year, with peak activity noted in May. Notable sightings include the Chiffchaff and Harlequin Ladybird, both peaking in this month, while other species like the Common Darter and Hornet Hoverfly are best observed in August. Early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended for optimal viewing of these species, making Bentinck Banks a rewarding destination for nature lovers.
