Beane Marsh is a tranquil floodplain grassland located in Hertford, protected since 2020 through a community initiative. Named after the River Beane, one of the rare chalk streams, this Local Wildlife Site plays a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and supporting rare species like the Water Vole. The reserve thrives under careful management, including seasonal cattle grazing, and connects vital habitats across the Beane Valley. Spring brings the return of Chiffchaffs and Whitethroats, while Kingfishers can be spotted along the river. Summer is vibrant with dragonflies, such as the Emperor Dragonfly, and butterflies like the Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown peaking in July. Autumn sees thrushes feasting on hedgerow berries, and in winter, Red Foxes remain active. For the best wildlife sightings, visit in July around 01:00 when activity peaks.
