Baston Fen is a nature reserve managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, located near the village of Baston, approximately 5 miles north of Market Deeping. This uncultivated fenland features a mix of permanent pasture, willow carr, and drier wooded areas, providing diverse habitats for a wide range of wildlife. The reserve is notable for its winter flooding, which attracts large numbers of wildfowl and supports over 300 plant species, making it a vital ecological site. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of bird species throughout the year, with peak activity in February, particularly at dusk around 18:00. Notable sightings include the Common Crane and Whooper Swan, along with various waders and ducks. Spring brings opportunities to spot Great Egrets and Western Marsh Harriers, while the reserve's rich invertebrate life, including numerous dragonflies and damselflies, can be observed during the warmer months.
