Barton Gravel Pit is a 1.1-hectare nature reserve located east of Barton-le-Clay in Bedfordshire, managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. This former gravel pit has been transformed into a vibrant chalk grassland, featuring a variety of wildflowers such as knotted hedge-parsley, common poppy, and the rare great pignut. Mature beech trees create a suitable habitat for the delicate white helleborine orchid, making this site a unique ecological haven. Visitors can expect to see a range of wildlife, particularly in May when species such as swift, house martin, and cowslip peak in activity. The best time for observation is around 1:00 AM, when these birds are most active. Other notable sightings include buzzards in April and hedgerow plants like hedge bedstraw in August, offering a rich tapestry of biodiversity throughout the seasons.
