Bartinney is a stunning hillside nature reserve located in Penwith, featuring a diverse mix of grassland, ponds, and heathland habitats. This area, which includes Bartinney Castle—an Iron Age enclosure—offers breathtaking views over the countryside and the Atlantic Ocean. The reserve is significant for its archaeological heritage, with structures dating back to the Bronze Age, and is particularly important for ground-nesting birdlife, making it essential to keep dogs under close control. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of bird species throughout the year, with notable sightings including the short-eared owl in March and the green sandpiper in April. June is a particularly active month, showcasing species such as the whitethroat, meadow pipit, and European stonechat, all best observed at dusk around 21:00. Additionally, visitors may encounter butterflies and reptiles like adders, enhancing the rich biodiversity of this captivating reserve.
