Barrow Wake is a remarkable nature reserve located along the Cotswold Escarpment in Gloucestershire, part of a larger Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) that includes Crickley Hill. This 56.8-hectare area features limestone grassland, scrub, and woodland, supporting a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including notable populations of Musk Orchids and Devil’s Bit Scabious. The reserve is managed by the National Trust and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, with grazing by Belted Galloway cattle helping to maintain the grassland habitat. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak butterfly activity occurring in June, particularly the Meadow Brown and Common Blue. Spring brings the Orange-tip butterfly, while the Tree Pipit and Buzzard are best observed in September. Visitors can also spot Adders in March and enjoy the sights and sounds of Peregrine falcons year-round. The best time for wildlife observation is typically around 01:00, making early morning visits particularly rewarding.
