Barrow Burn Wood is a small area of ancient deciduous woodland located above the Barrow Burn, a tributary of the Coquet. This mixed woodland features a variety of species including alder, willow, and hazel, alongside calcareous flushes that support butterwort and marsh lousewort. The site is noted for its rich biodiversity, with significant birdlife and is managed in partnership with Defence Estates and Northumberland National Park Authority. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of birds, including sparrowhawk, cuckoo, treecreeper, woodwarbler, and pied flycatcher. Notably, the wheatear has been observed here, with peak sightings occurring in May, particularly around 01:00. Visitors are likely to enjoy the vibrant flora and fauna during the spring months, making it an ideal time to explore the reserve.
