Barnsley Canal – Wilthorpe is a unique nature reserve featuring the remnants of the now-defunct Barnsley Canal, which offers a mix of open water, silted swamp areas, and expansive reedbeds. Located just a mile from Barnsley town centre, the reserve is characterized by its sinuous waterways and lush grasslands, including a notable stretch of continuous hedge that supports diverse birdlife. The area is accessible via a network of footpaths, making it an inviting destination for walkers and nature enthusiasts. Wildlife enthusiasts can look out for species such as Jack Snipe, which peaks in November, particularly at dawn. Other notable sightings include Blackbirds in March and Grey Herons in December. The best times for observation vary, with December being the overall peak month for activity. Visitors may also spot exquisite bee orchids in summer and enjoy the vibrant birdlife, including flocks of tits and thrushes, throughout the year.
