Barnell Reservoir is a charming nature reserve characterized by broadleaved woodland and lush ferns surrounding a historic reservoir, originally constructed in the 1880s. This tranquil area, rich in biodiversity, supports a variety of birds, bats, and invertebrates. The reserve's management allows natural processes to thrive in the woodland while maintaining a wildflower-rich grassland on the dam wall, encouraging diverse plant life. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a range of species throughout the year, with notable peaks in September for bats such as Pipistrelle and Leisler's Bat, best observed around 01:00. Spring brings vibrant displays of primroses and bluebells, while year-round residents like the Great Tit and House Sparrow can also be spotted. For birdwatchers, February is an excellent month to catch glimpses of Goldfinches and Robins, making Barnell Reservoir a rewarding destination for wildlife observation.
