Barlow Burn is a diverse nature reserve located in Gateshead, featuring a mix of grassland, woodland, and wetland habitats. The site includes disused sand quarry areas with ponds and rich flora, such as globeflower, bogbean, and various ferns. Managed by Durham Wildlife Trust since June 2014, Barlow Burn is recognized for its ecological value and offers visitors a chance to explore its unique plant and animal communities. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with notable peaks in January for jackdaws, woodpigeons, and blackbirds. The summer months bring butterflies like the common blue and meadow brown, while October is ideal for spotting common darters. The best times for observation vary, with early morning hours around midnight being particularly fruitful in winter and early afternoon in summer.
