Balls Wood is a 58.5-hectare nature reserve managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, located in Hertford Heath, East Hertfordshire. This varied woodland features mature coppiced hornbeams and a mix of oak, ash, and conifers, along with over 20 ponds that support diverse wildlife. The extensive sunny rides, which have been widened to enhance biodiversity, provide a vibrant habitat for numerous species, making it a key area for conservation. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a range of species throughout the year. Spring is particularly vibrant with bluebells and the calls of great spotted woodpeckers and sparrowhawks. Summer brings the appearance of butterflies like the speckled wood, while autumn showcases the striking wild service tree. Notably, April is the best month for sightings, with peak activity around 01:00, making it an ideal time to visit for those keen on observing the reserve's diverse fauna.
