Ballachrink is a nature reserve dedicated to protecting wildlife, accessible exclusively to members of MWT to minimise disturbance. Spanning 25 hectares, it features two lakes, three open meadows, and a mixed broadleaved wood, forming part of the Renscault and Ballachrink Bird Sanctuary. The reserve is designed to provide nesting habitats and flight ponds for wintering wildfowl, surrounded by a diverse range of trees and shrubs, with ongoing management to control non-native species. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak sightings in January for Little Grebe and Tufted Duck, and February for Coot and Teal. Mallards are present year-round, with notable activity peaking in March. For those interested in songbirds, Skylarks peak in November, while Choughs are best spotted in August. Early morning visits around midnight are recommended for optimal viewing of many species.
