Bakethin is a diverse nature reserve located along the northern edges of Kielder Water, featuring open water, wetland, woodland, and grassland habitats. Established in 1979 during the construction of Kielder Dam, it is part of the Northumbrian Water Environmental Partnership and offers easy access via well-surfaced paths. Visitors can enjoy scenic views from the historic viaduct and the accessible Bakethin Hide, which provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to a variety of species throughout the year, with the best time for observing wildfowl being the winter months. Notable sightings include the Marmalade Hoverfly and other hoverfly species peaking in July and August, particularly around 1:00 AM. Additionally, early spring brings opportunities to spot ospreys and goshawks, while late winter often features crossbills. The reserve's diverse habitats also support amphibians and a healthy fish population, making it a vibrant spot for nature lovers.
