Bagmere is a significant wildlife reserve located in Cheshire, characterised by its marshy fen surrounded by farmland. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it features a small area of open water and rich habitats including fen, marshy grassland, and carr woodland. Since its takeover by the Trust in 2009, the reserve has been managed to support a variety of special botanicals and birds, including the small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly, which relies on specific food plants found here. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a range of species throughout the year, with notable sightings including Mute Swans and Brimstone butterflies peaking in July and May, respectively. The reserve is particularly lively in July, when a variety of insects and the starling murmuration can be observed, best viewed from nearby roads. For optimal viewing, early morning visits around 01:00 are recommended to catch the peak activity of many species.
