Aughton Woods is an enchanting nature reserve characterized by ancient semi-natural woodland, located in a tranquil setting that invites exploration and reflection. Renowned for its vibrant spring displays, the reserve features stunning carpets of bluebells, alongside a variety of wildflowers such as primroses and foxgloves. The diverse habitats include damp ravines where rare wood fescue can be found, and the surrounding areas are rich in history, with remnants of former charcoal heaths and ancient lime trees. For wildlife enthusiasts, the best time to visit is in February, when sightings peak for species like goosanders and black-headed gulls. The reserve is also home to a variety of birds, including chiffchaffs, nuthatches, and breeding pied flycatchers. Evening walks may reveal the elusive woodcock, while the nearby River Lune offers opportunities to spot oystercatchers and common sandpipers from February to August.
