Aston Clinton Ragpits is a 2.9-hectare nature reserve located in Buckinghamshire, nestled within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Once a chalk quarry, this Site of Special Scientific Interest is now a vibrant habitat featuring a rich variety of chalkland flowers, including eight orchid species and over 25 types of butterflies. Managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, the reserve showcases steep slopes, scrub areas, and mature woodland, providing an excellent environment for diverse wildlife. Visitors can enjoy a spectacular display of orchids, particularly towards the end of June, when greater butterfly-orchids and fragrant orchids bloom. The best time to observe butterflies, such as the peacock and common blue, is in July, while the Small Heath can be spotted in May. Additionally, the reserve offers opportunities to see various bird species, with sightings of pochard peaking in December and woodpigeons in March. Keep an eye out for slow-worms and basking grass snakes during sunny days, adding to the rich wildlife experience.
