Astley Moss is a remarkable nature reserve located near Wigan, offering a unique wilderness experience just outside the urban landscape. This area has been revitalised through dedicated conservation efforts, with layers of sphagnum moss reclaiming land previously affected by peat cutting. The reserve features a variety of habitats, including wetland vegetation dominated by hare's-tail cottongrass and a distinctive strip of heather, supporting a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including rare species like the large heath butterfly. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting a range of species throughout the year. Notable sightings include the hooded crow, peaking in January, and the common quail, best observed at dusk in June. Spring is an excellent time to visit for blooming flora such as green alkanet and common carder bees, while winter brings raptors like short-eared owls. For the best experience, early morning visits in November may reveal Richard's pipit, while January afternoons are ideal for observing the hooded crow.
