Ashwell Quarry and Quarry Springs is a three-hectare nature reserve located near Ashwell in Hertfordshire, managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. This disused quarry features varied chalk grassland, supporting a rich array of flora, including orchids such as the Pyramidal Orchid and rare mosses in shaded hollows. The adjacent Quarry Springs, a Regionally Important Geological Site, provides a consistent water temperature that supports unique species like flatworms. Access is by permit only. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species throughout the year. Notable sightings include the Peregrine Falcon and Little Owl, both peaking in January, with the best viewing times around 16:00 and midnight, respectively. Spring brings the 7-spot Ladybird, while summer offers opportunities to spot the Gray Partridge at dusk in August. The diverse habitats make each season an exciting time to visit, with different species making their appearances throughout the year.
