Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands is a diverse habitat comprising meadowland, hedgerows, mature trees, and ponds, located near Leatherhead. This site, managed by volunteers from The Friends of Ashtead Rye Meadows Wetlands, has undergone significant restoration over the past 14 years, transforming the area into a thriving wetland alongside the Rye Brook. The reserve, now under the stewardship of Surrey Wildlife Trust, aims to enhance local biodiversity and create a wildlife corridor between Ashtead Common and Leatherhead Common. Visitors can look forward to a variety of wildlife, particularly during spring and summer months. Notable species include the Brimstone and Comma butterflies, peaking in April, and the Speckled Wood in June. The best times for sightings are often around 01:00, while the Garden Warbler can be heard at dusk in June. January brings the chance to spot Bohemian Waxwings and Woodpigeons, making each visit rewarding throughout the year.
