Ashley Wood is an enchanting ancient hazel and ash coppice located east of Blandford Forum, known for its stunning bluebell displays in spring. Acquired in 1999, the reserve has been managed under a coppice-with-standards system, fostering a diverse woodland habitat with sunny rides ideal for butterflies. Visitors can access the reserve on foot via a track off the B3082 Wimborne Road, with no parking available on-site. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species, particularly during peak times in January and March. Notable sightings include skylarks and grey partridges, both best observed at dusk around 21:00. March is particularly vibrant for meadow pipits and corn buntings, while the elusive short-eared owl can be spotted in October. With its rich avian life, Ashley Wood offers a rewarding experience for birdwatchers throughout the year.
