Ashberry Nature Reserve is an ancient woodland situated in a steep-sided valley shaped by glacial meltwater, complemented by flower-rich limestone grassland and marshes. This tranquil site features a diverse range of rare habitats due to its unique geology, including a clear stream that supports freshwater shrimps and white-clawed crayfish. The valley's marshy bottom is home to rare plants such as bird’s-eye primrose and marsh hawk’s-beard, making it a significant ecological area. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species, particularly in February when activity peaks. Notable sightings include red-legged partridge and red kite, best observed at dusk around 17:00. The reserve also hosts a range of mosses and plants that thrive in this unique environment. For those interested in flora, tormentil can be spotted in May, providing another opportunity to appreciate the reserve's biodiversity.
