Ash Ranges is a 1,392-hectare nature reserve located west of Pirbright in Surrey, owned by the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. This extensive area of dry heathland is part of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area and the Ash to Brookwood Heaths Site of Special Scientific Interest. It supports a variety of rare species, including the sand lizard, smooth snake, and unique heathland flora such as sundews and bell heather. Access is subject to military regulations, with closures indicated by red flags or locked gates. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for species such as the Wood Lark and Tree Pipit, particularly during their peak activity in June at dusk. Other notable sightings include the Meadow Pipit and Willow Warbler, which are best observed in March and April, respectively. The reserve is especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms, making it an ideal time for a visit to experience the stunning landscape and its diverse wildlife.
