Ancaster Valley is a narrow, steep-sided valley renowned for its limestone grassland, scrub, and woodland habitats. Located in Lincolnshire, it is one of the county's finest sites for limestone flowers, featuring species such as pasqueflower, bee and fragrant orchids, and dyer's greenweed. The reserve, acquired in 1982, is actively managed to maintain its flower-rich grassland through controlled sheep grazing and scrub clearance. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a variety of species, particularly in November when common toads are most active, with peak sightings occurring around midnight. The reserve is also home to numerous butterflies and bumblebees on sunny days, alongside a diverse bird population, including green and great spotted woodpeckers. Visiting during the warmer months will enhance your chances of witnessing the vibrant insect life and bird activity.
