Amwell Nature Reserve, located near Ware, is a vital wildlife haven that evolved from a former gravel pit. The reserve features a diverse range of habitats, including reedbeds, grassland, and woodland, with Great Hardmead Lake serving as a notable focal point. As part of the Lee Valley, it plays a crucial role in connecting various nature reserves along the River Lee, contributing to a broader Living Landscape that supports local biodiversity. Wildlife enthusiasts can expect to see a variety of species throughout the year, with peak sightings of Red-crested Pochard and Yellow-legged Gull occurring in February around 15:00. December is an excellent time to spot Smew and Gadwall, while January offers opportunities to observe Water Rail and Egyptian Goose. For the best experience, visiting during the afternoon is recommended, especially in the winter months when activity levels are high.
