Alverstone Mead is a captivating nature reserve located on the Isle of Wight, encompassing nearly 30 hectares of tranquil woodland, wet meadows, and wildflower meadows. This area is part of the Alverstone Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and offers a peaceful retreat adjacent to the Eastern Yar River, just a mile from Sandown. The reserve consists of four distinct areas: Alverstone Mead, Bensteads Marsh, Youngwoods Copse, and Bretts Meadow, and was entrusted to the Trust by the Wight Nature Fund in 2021. Visitors to Alverstone Mead can expect to see a variety of wildlife throughout the year, including red squirrels, dormice, and numerous bird species such as robins and kingfishers. Notable sightings peak in August, with activity from species like the European Greenfinch and Common Gull best observed at dusk. Additionally, the reserve is home to the Emperor Dragonfly, which peaks in June, and the White-tailed Eagle, which can be spotted in April. The diverse habitats make it an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike.
