Alvecote Pools is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) located alongside the River Anker, straddling the border of Warwickshire and Staffordshire. This nature reserve, covering 128 hectares, features a series of shallow pools formed by mining subsidence from the former Alvecote Colliery. Owned by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust since 1997, the reserve includes diverse habitats such as fen, reedbed, and woodland, making it a vital site for various wildlife species. Birdwatchers can expect to see over 100 bird species throughout the year, with notable sightings including Great Crested Grebes and Eurasian Wigeons peaking in April, particularly at dusk around 20:00. Other highlights include the elusive Tawny Owl, best observed in January at dusk, and the striking Great Egret, also peaking in January. Spring and summer bring a flurry of dragonflies, while autumn offers opportunities to spot Eurasian Bullfinches and Egyptian Geese.
