Altar Stones nature reserve offers stunning views across the Leicestershire countryside, situated on a rocky hilltop. This area is rich in geological history, featuring large outcrops of Precambrian volcanic ash and diverse heath-grassland. With its drystone walls and rocky outcrops, the reserve provides a habitat for a variety of insects, lichens, and rare plant species, making it a unique spot for nature enthusiasts and casual walkers alike. Wildlife highlights at Altar Stones include the vibrant foxglove, which peaks in January, and the speckled wood butterfly, best observed in August. Visitors may also spot the siskin and creeping buttercup during their respective peak months in January and February. The reserve is particularly lively in January, making it an excellent time for wildlife observation, especially around midnight when activity is highest.
