Allerthorpe Common Nature Reserve is a unique habitat located in East Yorkshire, featuring a mix of wet and dry heath, acid grassland, woodland, scrub, and open water. Designated as open access land, the reserve is surrounded by managed pine forest and has a rich history dating back to AD 1086. Its diverse landscape supports a variety of wildlife, including nationally rare species like the May lily, and is maintained through grazing by rare breeds and volunteer efforts. Visitors to Allerthorpe Common can expect to see a range of butterflies, particularly in July when species such as the Ringlet and Meadow Brown are most active. The best time for sightings is around 01:00, with other notable species like the Red Admiral peaking in September and the Peacock in April. In addition to butterflies, the reserve is home to various insects, including the Common Carder Bee in October and the Green Tiger Beetle in April, making it a vibrant spot for nature enthusiasts throughout the year.
