Aldbury Nowers is a stunning chalk grassland reserve located on the Chiltern escarpment in west Hertfordshire. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, it features a vibrant display of wildflowers and is a prime habitat for butterflies and solitary bees. The reserve, named after Ethel Amy Farquar, affectionately known as "Duchie," was officially opened in 1991 and is celebrated for its historical connections and natural beauty. Visitors can expect to see a variety of wildlife, particularly in July when species like the Meadow Brown and Marbled White butterflies are most active. The reserve also hosts Mute Swans and Greylag Geese, with sightings peaking in January. For bird enthusiasts, the Red Kite can be spotted during the winter months, while the Skylark is best observed in May. The best time for wildlife viewing across the reserve is generally around 01:00.
