Agden Bog is a vital nature reserve located on the north-west corner of Agden Reservoir in Bradfield Dale, showcasing a rare type of bog habitat that has largely vanished from the UK landscape. This site is particularly noted for its rich botanical diversity, featuring sphagnum beds, purple moor-grass wet grassland, bracken, and birch woodland. The reserve is a peaceful retreat for wildlife enthusiasts, but please note that dogs are not permitted. Wildlife highlights at Agden Bog include a variety of bird species, with sightings peaking in May, particularly around 1:00 AM. Look out for magpies, house martins, and the elusive nightjar, which nests nearby. Additionally, the reserve is home to mammals such as brown hares and roe deer, as well as amphibians like common toads and frogs. For those interested in insects, keep an eye out for the golden-ringed dragonfly, which can be seen hawking over the mire during warmer months.
