Abbots Moss is a significant area of acid bog and dry heath located within Delamere Forest, covering 12 hectares. This site features a unique floating 'schwingmoor' bog with a peat base dating back approximately 7000 years, making it one of the few remaining examples of this rare habitat in Cheshire. The reserve is home to a variety of delicate plants and wildlife, including the carnivorous sundew, and has restricted public access to protect its fragile ecosystem. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for a range of species at Abbots Moss, particularly in January when sightings peak. Notable observations include the Harlequin Ladybird and Smew, with the best times for viewing around 01:00 and 15:00, respectively. Other species such as the Common Frog and Common Toad can be spotted in March, while the Kingfisher is best seen in May. The diverse habitats also support large numbers of dragonflies and butterflies, making it a fascinating destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
